Optical Energy Gaps of Cd1-xCoxIn₂Se₄ Single Crystals

Abstract

Cd_(1-x)Co_xIn₂Se₄(x=0.00, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.50) single crystals which substituted cobalt for cadmium in CdIn₂Se₄. were grown by the vertical Bridgman technique. The composition and structure of Cd_(1-x)Co_xIn₂Se₄ single crystals were analyzed, and the optical absorption were measured. The grown single crystals have a pseudocubic structure and a lattice constant α which decreases slightly by increasing the composition x. The optical 3bsorption spectra obtained near the fundamental absorption edge showed that these compounds have a direct and an indirect energy band gap and its value is decreased by increasing the composition x. The composition dependence of the lattice constant and the optical energy gap in Cd_(1-x)Co_xIn₂Se₄ single crystals showed that the slope was the same from x=0.00 to x=0.016 varied at x=0.016, and was equal from x=0.016 to x=0.50. These phenomena revealed that solid solution is formed between CdIn₂Se₄ and CoIn₂Se₄ when x≥0.016.
